My first interest in photography was when I was racing motocross, one of my hobbies and I had gotten badly injured, so I was unable to ride. Due to the injury my eye’s had changed as a viewer of the sport, as I thought of different ways I could portray the sport through photographs. From the insurance pay out I invested in a D-SLR camera which is where my insight to photography all started. As I was injured I was unable to carry on with my other hobbies which were rollerblading and skateboarding. I turned my passion from the sports into photography taking photo’s of my friends while they skated. With my work I really tried to create a feel for movement with the skateboarding to show how skateboarding feels with excitement through a photograph. My photography has progressed through Photoshop editing as one of my strong elements within my work as I like manipulating images, and testing with the element of always being able to un-do what I’ve done. I like taking photograph’s because it is just like capturing moments and memories, like taking a still shot of the moment you wish to remember. I really hope to go on to take photographs for sports magazine’s or advertisement campaigns for brands and or companies as I really like working to brief’s as it gives me something to aim my work giving me more focus on one subject for my photography. I now am moving away from the normality of photography, instead of looking into the moment capturing the photo, im going to take photo’s while physically in the moment, point of view and helping capture the feeling, of skating for instance.
From University I am hoping to gain experience from working in a professional environment of solo work being produced independently, giving me freedom of developing my work. The freedom to experiment wether it turns out well or not so, it will help me gain experience with what will work well in the media of photography and what wont. This experience will inspire my photography for clients, as this course will develop my style and techniques which I prefer to use in my work. The work which I will be producing will have no limitations, I can go as big and as creative as I want, as this is not possible in college due to facilities and space available.
I think that independence in my work is key as it will give me the confidence of finding my own brief’s in the real world so to say. Actually working for a client which will help lead my work instead of producing naïve work that has no aim or goal.
